When I was looking into changing careers I did a lot of research into possible options. I quickly decided on the health and medical area. The fact that the population is aging means healthcare is the fastest growing job market in the U.S.. I decided on physical therapy but there are plenty of options.
All careers, from dental assistants to surgeons are in high demand, and paying higher salaries than ever before. Therefore, whether you have lost your job due to the current economy, you want to switch career paths, or you are deciding what your first career will be you should consider a career in the medical field. This is a great time to start a medical career, especially for those that like to help others have a better quality of life. (P.S. I ultimately became a physical therapist!)
Training Doesn’t Have To Take 7 Years
Many people feel that they cannot get into the medical field because they cannot afford, or do not have the time to take the training. While it is true that many medical professions require a great deal of training, there are still lucrative careers available in the medical field for those that only have a high school diploma. Of course you will still need to take some type of schooling or training, but for several fields the training can be done online for very little cost. For example check out my post on EKG Technician training.
Many of these courses are self-paced and available to anyone with a high school diploma. Even someone with a GED can take certain types of medical courses if they can pass the initial examinations. Let us look at some of the lucrative medical careers that are in high demand.
Let’s take a look at some popular career paths that are really on the rise.
Home Health Aide – Position On The Rise
One career that you could choose is to become a home health aide. Becoming a home health aide can be a rewarding career for those that enjoy helping people in need. Home health aides assist people that are sick, injured, or elderly. They work in the home of the person that requires the assistance; a home health aide could have a wide range of duties depending on the client and your level of training.
To become a basic home health aide takes 2-4 weeks of training, this training can be found at many different schools or community health organizations. You will need to learn how to help the patient with range of motion exercises, how to recognize emergencies, and other basic procedures. This career pays well and you can increase your earning potential by taking further schooling. Many nurses work their way through school by being home health aides.
Physical Therapy As Career Path
One of the most highly demanded medical careers at this time is that as a physical therapist. Physical therapists are professionals that are trained to use different rehabilitation and exercise techniques in order to treat injuries or abnormalities that limit the movement of their patients. As a physical therapist you will be working directly with the patient in order to relieve pain and increase their range of motion. This profession requires a college degree. You will need earn a bachelor’s degree, earn a graduate degree, and then complete a residency.
Try Becoming A Medical Assistant
If you were to choose a career as a medical assistant you would be choosing a great career. A medical assistant is one of the most in-demand careers in the medical field. Medical assistants are those that work behind the scenes making our medical system work. They perform basic clinical task, administrative duties, and other key jobs. You could choose to work in a hospital, clinic, or the office of a doctor.
There could be variables to your duties as a medical assistant depending on where you work and what state you are working within. Possibly the best part of becoming a medical assistant is that you can perform this job with only a high school diploma. If you can find a doctor that is willing to train you on the job, you will not be required to take any further training.
With that being said, most doctors and hospitals prefer to hire someone that is already trained. Most vocational schools will offer programs that will train you for the field of medical assisting. The program will take one year to complete, in the future you can increase your salary by continuing your education.
Nursing Provides Many In Demand Positions
Nursing is another medical career that is in high demand; nurses are highly sought after in all areas of medicine. There are several levels of nursing allowing you to choose where you would like to work. You can become a nursing assistant, which takes the least amount of education.
As the name implies you will assists nurses with their duties. You could choose to become an LPN, Licensed Practical Nurse, which takes more education than becoming a nursing assistant. You can also become an RN, which also has different levels. You can choose to become an RN with an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree.
